Growing Corn Experiment

Is anyone reading this post into Permaculture or Edible Food Foresting?
OK, it’s admission time. I am. I’m very interested in cultivating a backyard full of edible plants/fruits. I have tried different ways to see if I can grow or propagate food plants ~ learning from books and the internet, for it is afterall my 1st garden.

When you have that 1 pathetic remaining cob in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, a month after the supermarket corn season, what do you do with it? I decided to semi-cover the whole cob with soil (unpeeled) in my sheltered patch behind a bokashi bin, which I know is shaded and perpetually moist.

I observed its ‘progress’ but today I just felt I had to move it/them to open space.

Has anyone grown corn this way? How did people grow corn in the past? What happened to cobs which were not harvested or overlooked in small corn patches?

I have sowed ‘Silver Queen’ corn and they are growing fine for now but I will leave these little corn sprouts in the hands of Mother Nature… and so goes my strange backyard experiments.

  1. The Three Sisters is an early method of planting corn it including growing a squash and beans as well as corn. Your backyard experiments are interesting to me.

    • Thanks. I’ve tried 3-sisters twice so far but have not gotten the seed sowing timing right. Beans grew so much faster than corn & had no “stakes” to climb up & then squash & cantaloup seeds germinated but got dug up by raccoons because the corn seemed to stay at 5″ tall no plant camouflage. But I’m trying again this year, corn is sowned already (& sprouted) as winter has been warmer than usual. I will put beans in when they are 10-12″ tall. Advice will be greatly appreciated. 🙂

  3. I don’t think that will work, a ‘corn’ or maize stem on an adult plant is about 30-50mm thick, you will have a space problem unless you pull apart the individual plants and replant them. But that’s a double job, you should have just planted them in the ground in the first place.

    • Thanks. I agree with you (in theory). But this is an unplanned experiment from unforeseen cob germination. As Buckminster Fuller once said “You never change things by fighting existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” Is this practical? Will it be a new way of backyard corn growing? I’m keen to see what (literally) surfaces. 😉


  4. You should actually just pick all of those sprouts, put them in a salad and eat them!
