Cool season edible flower plant, nice & peppery. Seeds from Spring, if left on soil will re-sprout in Fall ~ the way Mother Nature intended. Those that have fallen I leave alone, those that are visible and still green, on their stalks, I harvest to pickle ~ I call my pickle Nonya’s Capers, because I use them like capers.
And today, I am using my last bottle of Nonya’s Capers from last Spring.
I crush some to use in salad dressing, pizza sauce, pesto for pasta … just to add that little kick like mustard and horseradish.
As for the plant itself, I use the leaves and flowers in salads and sometimes even as a garnish for dry curry dishes.
Nasturtiums are not only visually beautiful they are superb ground and trellis covers and are good companions to bean & gourd vines, adding color & bringing the bees to help with pollination
